15 Juicy Celebrity Breakups That Left Us Reeling
Fame and beauty does not make one impervious to heartache (stars, they’re just like us!). In a way, being a celebrity can make a breakup even more difficult, as every detail of their relationship is public fodder waiting to be scrutinized.
Some celebs that have called it quits, like Ben and Jen, Brad and Jen, and Ben and a different Jen, have scarred our hearts forever, and there’s research that explains why these star-studded splits have the ability to break our hearts despite having no connection to these people whatsoever.
Ever hear of a “parasocial relationship” and what it entails? These are mostly one-sided relationships with an individual (often a celebrity or influencer) as a result of repeated exposure. Published by the Rochester Institute of Technology, the small study found that the more a celebrity shares online, the more invested we become in their lives. The study’s author speculates the prevalence of these bonds are so strong that they could potentially replace interpersonal relationships.
Another study even found that when people are told negative celebrity gossip — a breakup, a DUI charge, etc –– the region of the brain associated with pleasure and reward showed “moderately strong” activity, as sinister as it sounds.
To quench your thirst for celebrity gossip (because we know how thirsty you probably are, even if you don’t want to admit it), AskMen has rounded up the 15 juiciest breakups from recent memory.
Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich

The relationship between Disney alum Demi Lovato and Young and the Restless star Max Ehrich was accelerated by the pandemic when the two chose to quarantine together shortly after meeting. Four months into isolation, Elrich proposed. “I love you so much and will forever cherish your pure, beautiful, infinite soul,” he wrote on social media.
Less than a month after Lovato shared with SiriusXM Hits 1’s The Morning Mash Up on September 11 that quarantine either “makes or breaks the deal,” Us Weekly confirmed their engagement was over.
Speculations for the split are ample, most of which indicate Lovato was jealous of Elrich’s rising fame –– and his alleged crush on Selena Gomez after doctored images emerged online didn’t help either. Both have reportedly recorded a song about their whirlwind romance (Lovato’s is titled “Still Have Me,” whereas Elrich’s was only announced this week) so it looks like we’ll soon be hearing both sides of the story.
Cardi B and Offset
Most thought that after filing for divorce, rapstress Cardi B and Migos member Offset were done for good. The papers stated the marriage between the on-again, off-again couple was “irretrievably broken” and “there are no prospects for a reconciliation.”
The two reportedly rekindled one month later during Cardi’s birthday in Las Vegas over the weekend and she’s since deleted Twitter following backlash for taking Offset back despite repeated accounts of infidelity.
“Listen y’all, I’m just a crazy b*tch,” she ranted on Instagram Live. “You know how I be arguing with y’all on social media? That’s exactly how we are between me and my man. So when people be saying I be doing sh*t for attention with this and that, no, I’m just a crazy b*tch.”
Lady Gaga and Christian Carino
Speculation surfaced that Gaga was dating her talent agent, Christian Carino, when the two were spotted at a Kings of Leon concert back in February 2017. By October 2018, Mother Monster confirmed the two were engaged. Speculation regarding the state of their relationship arose at the Grammys, when Gaga was spotted without her ring and didn’t thank Carino when accepting the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Not long after that evening, their split was confirmed by Gaga’s team.
While People reported “there’s no long dramatic story” to tell, Us Weekly happened to have some intel. “He was jealous,” a source told the publication. “He was trying to find her all the time and texted her a lot. Her friends didn’t like him either.”
Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson
Celesbian couples are tough to come by, so the queer world was devastated when supermodel Cara Delevingne and actress Ashley Benson called it quits after two years. While details regarding their split are scarce (sources say the relationship simply “ran its course”), it’s the refreshing maturity of their split that makes it notable.
Shortly after their rumoured breakup, Benson was spotted kissing rapper G-Eazy. Expectedly, the internet overreacted, made assumptions, and began harassing Benson. That didn’t sit well with Delevingne, who promptly came to her defense.
“It’s more important now more than ever to spread love, not hate,” Delevingne posted on Instagram. “To everyone hating on @ashleybenson, please stop. You don’t know the truth, only her and I do and that’s exactly how it should be.”
Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock
Kelly first met her manager/husband Brandon at the American Country Music Awards in 2006 while rehearsing a song with Rascal Flatts, who Brandon was also managing. Six years later, the two reconnected through Blake Shelton (who Brandon also managed) and started dating. Ten months later, Brandon proposes and by 2016, the couple have two children together.
Things got bad during the pandemic, so much that the two fled Los Angeles to their Montana ranch in an attempt to fix things. Clarkson filed for divorce in June, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
A source told Entertainment Weekly that the move to Montana was detrimental to their relationship and things escalated, growing beyond repair. This breakup isn’t so juicy as it is devastating. We love some OG American Idol winner!
Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson
The Kardashians have a flare for the dramatics, so when one is enduring a breakup, the whole world will know (Kris will make sure of it). In September 2016, Khloe let the world know she was in a relationship with Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristian Thompson after posting pictures of the two smooching on Snapchat.
Roughly two years later, TMZ reports Tristian has cheated on Khloe, one day before Khloe gives birth to their daughter, True. In February 2019, news breaks that Khloe and Tristian have split after Jordyn Woods, Kylie’s best friend, and Thompson were spotted “all over each other” at a house party. The couple officially ended it days later. “The whole [Kardashian] family is writing Jordyn off,” a source said.
On Red Table Talk, Woods confirmed that she and Thompson had kissed, insisting there was “no making out, no tongue, no nothing.” Khloe quickly retorts by calling Woods a liar, blaming her for tearing their family apart. After backlash, Khloe revokes her statement, blaming Thompson instead.
It is currently rumoured that Khloe and Tristian are back together, but that’s only been suggested by Kourtney’s baby daddy, Scott Disick, proving once again that even during tragedy, the Kardashians are entertaining AF.
Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead
When HGTV’s favorite couple split, many speculated Christina had cheated on Tarek with their contractor, which seemed to be confirmed when the two were later pictured holding hands in public. Allegedly, cops were called when Tarek heard the news and stormed out of their home with a gun. The details regarding the split are hazy, since the couple shared that there was no infidelity in their relationship.
Not long after their hit show Flip or Flop aired in 2013, the couple faced some serious health challenges. Tarek was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, followed by testicular cancer. While going through radiation, Christina suffered a miscarriage. “I lost 50 pounds and was taking a large amount of pain meds to try and help the pain,” he wrote. “Truthfully those meds really affected my mental and physical state and changed who I was.”
These unfortunate events proved too difficult to overcome and the split was finalized in January 2018. Twelve months later, Christina suspiciously married TV host Ant Anstead, though the two have since split.
Adele and Simon Konecki
Adele is the voice we listen to when going through a breakup, so when she and husband Simon Konecki split after eight years together and three years of marriage, we all felt the impact –– while selfishly anticipating her next album.
According to sources, the cause of the breakup was Adele’s ascent to superstardom. “They had a lot in common early on, but eventually they just grew apart,” a source said. “She became a bigger and bigger star, and he was okay [with] being in the background, but as she got bigger and had massive tours and intense schedules, they just grew apart.”
Reportedly, the British songstress has been ordered to pay her ex $140 million of her reported $190 million net-worth in the divorce. Around this time, Adele is pictured looking understandably distressed. Since the split, Adele has dropped over 120 pounds, which stirred speculation as to whether this transformation was due to stress or diet and exercise. Just let her live!
Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau
After just three months together, millionaire YouTubers Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau announced their marriage, causing fans to question whether this romance was legitimate or for clout. Whatever the reason, the two began experiencing marital troubles when filming their MTV reality show No Filter: Tana Mongeau.
“You shouldn’t do business with f*cking people that you date,” Mong said. “I feel like Jake has been slowly, from the moment I met him, transforming into a different person. But it’s like now I’m sitting here like eight months in or whatever like, ‘I don’t even f*cking know you anymore.’”
Then came the cheating rumors. Jake was spotted out and about with ex-girlfriend Erika Costell just weeks after getting married. In response, Mongeau posted a video of her singing Ariana Grande’s ‘Thank U, Next’ changing the lyrics to:
“Thought I’d end up with Bella [Thorne], but it wasn’t a match. Wrote some songs about Hunter [Moreno], now I listen and laugh,” she sang. “Even actually got married, and for Jake I’m so thankful. Except when he goes out to lunch with his ex and I find out on Twitter.”
Surprising no one, the couple called it quits in January 2020 (via Youtube, of course), while managing millions of clicks along the way. Evidently, breakups are good business.
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green
Earlier this year, Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green confirmed their split after 10+ years of marriage. On his podcast, Green divulged the two had been “growing apart” for a while, which makes sense, considering Fox filed for divorce back in 2015, but decided to work on things after getting pregnant with their third child.
In May 2020, Fox was photographed with rapper Machine Gun Kelly while filming together in Puerto Rico. “She met this guy on set,” Brian explains on his podcast. “Megan and I have talked about him. I trust her judgment. It’s really important to me that people don’t treat anyone like a villain or a victim in this situation.”
After Kelly featured Fox in one of his music videos, Green took to social media to spill his feelings. “She’s been my best friend for 15 years, and I don’t want to lose that,” he said. “There’s this sense of loss of, How do I go on with this big part of my life that I’ve always known and loved and shared changing? What does that landscape look like? What does that life look like?”
Megan has yet to comment, but it seems like things are really caput between these two.
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler
We’ve been watching Cavallari’s dating life since Laguna Beach, so when the reality star married ex Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in 2013, we were thrilled that she had finally found the love of her life. But things were far from perfect with plenty of drama evident from the start.
The two briefly called off their engagement in 2011, and Cavallari and Cutler ultimately called it quits in April 2020 after seven years of marriage and a decade together. In the divorce filing, Cavallari accused Cutler of “inappropriate marital conduct” as well as “irreconcilable differences.”
“The word around Nashville is they really just don’t like each other anymore,” a source told Us Weekly in April 2020. “They would accuse each other of cheating, but nothing really solid. They are both very stubborn and bump heads a lot and neither backs down.”
Between Cavallari’s alleged frivolous spending and disdain for her in-laws, as well as Cutler’s temper and rumoured infidelity with Cavalleri’s friend, the two were said to only on the same page when it came to their children, though Cavalleri did request primary custody of their children in the divorce.
Rihanna and Hassan
Jameel Rihanna has proved time and time again that no matter what she does, the world will be watching. This is especially true when the R&B icon broke up with her Saudi boyfriend, who happened to be a billionaire. The two were together for three years with the romance kept private. The two are said to have split because they weren’t a good long-term match, which brought about a rare glimpse at a level of vulnerability we don’t usually see.
“I’m realizing life is really short,” she told British Vogue after the split. “You don’t have a lot of time to tolerate sh*t, you know? You put so much on your plate. When you’re overwhelmed, you need to start cutting things out. And I’m overwhelmed too much. What’s happening now is that I’m going back to black and white. My grey area is shutting down.”
She even discussed children in the interview, confessing she’d like to have three or four with or without a father figure. “[Society will] diminish you as a mother if there’s not a dad in your kids’ lives,” she explained. “But the only thing that matters is happiness, that’s the only healthy relationship between a parent and a child. That’s the only thing that can raise a child truly, is love.”
Teresa and Joe Guidice
The split between Teresa and Joe Guidice is arguably the biggest breakup in Housewives history. After being found guilty of engaging in bank, mail and wire fraud (which the RHONJ couple netted over five million dollars in a decade), Teresa was sentenced to 15 months in a federal prison with Joe behind bars for 41 months. Because the two have four children together, one parent was able to stay with the kids while the other served time.
When Joe was released, he was detained by ICE, filed a deportation appeal, and was denied. Joe has since been living in his native Italy where, after a televised family visit, the two called it quits. Teresa was not interested in having a long distance relationship with Joe, especially since their relationship had changed after their time apart.
She told Andy Cohen: “We’re both two different people now. I don’t know, I’m not the same Teresa I was, and I know he’s not the same Joe. Like I told him, no matter what, I always want us to respect each other and I do love him as a person.”
Rumors surfaced that Teresa had been seeing various young men while Joe was in prison, and the subject was teased heavily on the show. Whether this is true or not, we can all agree that it’s going to be a lot of fun watching Bravo’s favorite table-flipper start dating again.
Halsey and G-Eazy
Singer Halsey and rapper G-Eazy dated for a year before splitting in 2018. She wrote her hit breakup song “Without Me” about him, and the lyrics heavily implied that Eazy had cheated many times. They briefly got back together later that year. More recently, insights regarding their relationship have come to light.
Specifically, we learned that G-Eazy may have been abusive. After being harassed by trolls commenting “G-Eazy” on her posts (Eazy was trending after a video surfaced of him and Megan Thee Stallion kissing), Halsey spoke up:
“I see y’all in the comments,” she wrote. “And I know you think you’re funny. Cause you’re at home on your iPhone and I’m not a real human being to you. I hope to God you never have to experience an abusive relationship. And if you do, I hope the world is kinder to you than you are to me.” These details are grim, and we hope Halsey is OK.
Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber
He might be married to Hailey Baldwin now (the two had wed in September 2018), but JB’s first love to Ms. Gomez was an undeniable force. Even after they broke up, Bieber told Access Hollywood: “I’m never going to stop loving her. I’m never going to stop checking in on her.”
The breakup was public, but only in the fact that the two were clearly heartbroken. Details regarding the split were few, but Bieber hints to i-d magazine that his cheating might have been a factor. The two tried to escape the subject, but since both were releasing albums largely inspired by one another (Bieber told Ellen DeGeneres that three songs on his Purpose album were about Gomez) the subject was on the tip of everyone’s tongues.
“It’s difficult for people to separate us,” Gomez told The Sunday Times Style magazine. “The Internet wants to freeze this moment in time and constantly repeat it.” Sounds like Justin and Selena are this generation’s Justin and Britney, for better or for worse.
